Massillon is located in the Maumee Valley of Northeast Ohio, and was founded in 1854. The original name of the town was North Perry, but that name was already being used for a nearby town, so the name was changed to Massillon. Massillon’s history dates back to 1854, when a group of settlers from Perry County created a community in the Maumee Valley. The original settlers came from Perry County, but were unable to do business because Perry County’s newly formed county was still waiting for a post office. The settlers were looking for a new community where they could continue to do business, so they chose to move to the Maumee Valley.
